In the second round of the new Premier League season, Newcastle United lost 2-3 to Liverpool at home. Anthony Gordon was sent off with a red card in first-half stoppage time for a dangerous challenge, and he apologized on social media after the match.
Gordon said: “I want to sincerely apologize to my teammates and fans. My intentions were good—I just wanted to bring some energy to the game, but my timing for the tackle was wrong.
“I also want to apologize to Virgil van Dijk. I would never intentionally make a tackle like that to hurt someone. We spoke after the game, and he understood where I was coming from.
“More importantly, I’m proud of how I performed on the pitch and of our game tonight. The atmosphere you created makes St. James’ Park so special. I love everything we stand for as a club, especially right now. I’ll be back, and I’ll be better—just like I have been after every setback I’ve faced. See you soon.”
