In the 2nd round of the Premier League, Liverpool defeated Newcastle United 3-2 away. 16-year-old Red Devils youngster Rio Ngumoha scored the winning goal, making him the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s 133-year history.
Liverpool took an early 2-goal lead in the game thanks to goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike. However, they were pegged back by 2 goals from Newcastle United, who were playing with 10 men—one of which came in the 87th minute. After suffering a late equalizer, Liverpool’s head coach opted to bring on young player Ngumoha. In the 10th minute of stoppage time, Mohamed Salah delivered a cross, Dominik Szoboszlai made a clever dummy, and it was Ngumoha, unmarked at the far post, who slotted home the winning goal with a push shot.
This goal also saw the 16-year-old (16 years and 361 days old) Ngumoha become the youngest goalscorer in Liverpool’s history. Meanwhile, he also ranks as the 4th youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, behind James Vaughan (16 years and 270 days old), James Milner (16 years and 356 days old), and Wayne Rooney (16 years and 360 days old).
