On the first matchday of the new UEFA Champions League season, Bayern Munich defeated the visiting Chelsea 3-1 at the Allianz Arena. After the game, Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah talked about the team’s and his own performance.
When asked about Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s view that he should have been sent off, Tah said: “If I had hit him (Pedro) in the face, then I should have been sent off. But I didn’t. I can understand the yellow card – that was the right decision.”
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany, when discussing the incident, stated: “Actually, I thought the opponent committed a foul. I might be biased here. I thought his jersey was being pulled, and he was trying to break free at that moment. He was turned around, and as a defender, your instinctive reaction is to push him away. I don’t think this is a big deal at all.”
In addition, Tah also addressed the recent comments that belittle the Bundesliga and claim Bayern Munich has no chance in the Champions League: “There have been a lot of comments. From what I know, some of them are quite disrespectful. We let our performances on the pitch do the talking, and we did that today. We made a statement, and we should keep doing this. Bayern Munich has never been, and will never be, underdogs. We don’t need to say much about this – as I said, we let our performances on the pitch do the talking.”
