In the Bulgarian First League championship playoff, Levski Sofia face CSKA Sofia. Just hearing those two names is enough to smell the gunpowder unique to the Balkan Peninsula. This is the Sofia derby, the fiercest rivalry in Bulgarian football, bar none. But today’s betting line is interesting. Levski are giving a quarter goal at home, with the home side priced at 0.90. The league leaders against the fourth-placed team, yet only a quarter-goal home favorite — this line is as shallow as the Black Sea beaches in Bulgaria: step on it and it’s all sand. First, let’s look at the home side, Levski. With 22 wins, 4 draws, and 4 losses from 30 matches, they sit top of the table with 70 points. At home, they have 13 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss, scoring 38 and conceding just 9. Those numbers would make them a dominant force in Bulgaria. But in their last three championship playoff matches, they have not had it easy — a 1-1 draw with Ludogorets, a 0-1 loss to the same opponent, and a narrow 1-0 win over CSKA 1948 Sofia. They have scored only 2 goals in those three games, and their attack has suddenly gone from a machine gun to a slingshot. What about CSKA Sofia? In the regular season they finished fourth with 16 wins, 8 draws, and 6 losses. Away from home, they had 6 wins, 4 draws, and 5 losses, scoring 17 and conceding 14. The numbers do not look as impressive as Levski’s, but in the playoff stage they have looked like a different team — unbeaten in three with 2 wins and 1 draw, scoring 4 and conceding 4, including an away win over CSKA 1948 Sofia. More importantly, in their most recent away match against Levski, they held their rivals to a 1-1 draw while receiving a quarter-goal handicap. CSKA’s resilience in derbies cannot be explained by league position alone. There is another detail worth noting. Levski’s center-back Vujicic is out with a metatarsal fracture, while defensive midfielder Gasper Ding is suspended for yellow-card accumulation. With two pillars removed from the middle and back of the team, the stability of the defense has to be questioned. CSKA Sofia only have holding midfielder Eto’o suspended, a far more manageable absence. A quarter-goal line is simply too shallow for a league leader with an 87% home win rate. The bookmakers have not shown Levski enough respect, and there may be a deeper read here on how they see this derby. The night of the Sofia derby is bound to be anything but calm, and CSKA Sofia’s form in the playoffs makes it even more believable that they can produce a stronger performance tonight.
