José Mourinho could be officially announced as Benfica's head coach as early as this Wednesday. Currently, the two parties have already made contact regarding this matter, but an agreement with the manager has not yet been reached. Mourinho is currently abroad for personal reasons, so no final deal has been concluded.
Mourinho will succeed Bruno Lage as Benfica's head coach. The 62-year-old coach will sign a contract until the end of the current season, marking his return to Portuguese football 21 years after leaving FC Porto.
More than a month before the club's presidential election, Rui Costa has chosen Mourinho in an attempt to revive the team's good form.
Throughout his coaching career, Mourinho has won 26 titles. Earlier this season, he managed Turkish side Fenerbahçe. He left Fenerbahçe after failing to qualify for the Champions League group stage, and that decisive qualifying match was precisely against Benfica.
If the move goes through, Mourinho will return to Benfica—a club he previously managed during the 2000-2001 season. His first match in charge will be against Portuguese Primeira Liga side Aves this Saturday.
