André Onana is going through a tough time at Old Trafford recently. The Cameroonian goalkeeper has struggled to establish himself as Manchester United’s first-choice goalkeeper since the start of this season. After the season kicked off, Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayındır has gradually gotten more playing time in the league, yet neither of the two goalkeepers has delivered top-tier performances—this has led Manchester United to look for new goalkeeper options in the transfer market.
On the transfer deadline day, Belgian goalkeeper Mateusz Łęgowski also joined Manchester United from Royal Antwerp. It remains unclear whether the 23-year-old goalkeeper will directly become the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper; however, for Rúben Amorim, he now has more options to choose from. Bayındır, Onana, and Łęgowski will all compete for the starting goalkeeper position, with Tom Heaton also in the mix.
Manchester United goalkeeper Onana still maintains a good relationship with head coach Amorim. Nevertheless, Amorim has made his message very clear to all Manchester United players—including Onana—that anyone who wants to play must perform at their best.
Onana and Bayındır have stayed at Old Trafford after the closure of England’s summer transfer window, so it is still unknown who will be the starting goalkeeper for the rest of the season. However, as Bayındır comes from the Turkish league, there is a possibility that either he or Onana could leave after the transfer window closes to join clubs in Saudi Arabia, the Turkish Super Lig, or other leagues.
Therefore, Amorim now needs to make a crucial decision: selecting a starting goalkeeper for Manchester United. Łęgowski is a highly praised young goalkeeper, but he has no Premier League experience. Thus, it remains uncertain which of the three will continue to serve as the starting goalkeeper for now.
