Manchester United players are concerned about the rapid shift in the team's internal morale after the club has already lost two of its first four Premier League matches this season.
United lost to Arsenal at home in the opening round of the league, and then suffered a 0-3 defeat to Manchester City (Man City) last Sunday. Worse still, they suffered a humiliating loss to League Two side Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout in their EFL Cup campaign. According to sources from the dressing room, the atmosphere has been particularly low following the Manchester Derby, with United players regretting the missed opportunity to beat Man City—especially considering that Man City had previously lost two consecutive matches, to Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively.
Prior to the season, Manchester United went on a harmonious pre-season tour of the United States, with their main base in Chicago during the trip. At that time, the team was full of optimism about achieving success in the new season.
However, their season has gotten off to a poor start, having won only one out of five matches so far. That sole victory was a hard-fought one three weeks ago against newly-promoted Burnley, secured with a penalty in the 97th minute.
Uncertainty at the goalkeeper position has largely contributed to United's difficult start. Altay Bayındır and André Onana made mistakes that led to the club's defeats against Arsenal and Grimsby Town respectively. Up front, £73.62 million striker Benjamin Šeško has failed to score a single goal in five matches, while United have only netted one goal in six hours of regular play in the Premier League.
Manchester United is currently ranked 14th in the league. They will face Chelsea at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, followed by an away match against Brentford, a home game against Sunderland, and then the international break.
Since taking charge on November 11 last year, Amorim's side has won only 8 out of 31 Premier League matches—with 5 of those victories coming against teams that are still in the Premier League currently. This has put him under increasing pressure.
