Today, Wolfsburg officially announced the early termination of their contract with 34-year-old Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, whose original deal was set to run until 2027. Eriksen has not announced his retirement and expressed his desire to be closer to his family in Denmark.
Eriksen stated: “Right now, what matters most to me is being close to my family in Denmark. I am very glad that we were able to find a mutual solution together. My time at Wolfsburg was filled with many highs and lows. I know the club is now in reliable hands to find its way back in the Bundesliga, and I firmly believe Wolfsburg has a successful future ahead. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who accompanied me at Wolfsburg. Playing for you was a tremendous honor, and I will look back on this time with fond memories.”
It is worth noting that during a friendly between Denmark and Ukraine on June 8 of this year, Eriksen suddenly collapsed due to heart complications; however, he quickly regained consciousness, walked off the pitch under his own power, and was transported to the hospital for medical examinations.
Back during the Euro 2020 group stage match between Denmark and Finland in 2021, Eriksen suffered a sudden on-pitch collapse and cardiac arrest, prompting team doctors to rush onto the pitch to administer emergency treatment and perform CPR. Ultimately,
Eriksen was resuscitated and cleared of danger. He was subsequently fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) and made his return to competitive action 259 days later, coming on as a substitute for Brentford against Newcastle United in the Premier League in 2022.
