During the ongoing Round of 32 FIFA World Cup fixture between the Netherlands and Morocco, Dutch forward Cody Gakpo scored a goal to put the Netherlands 1-0 ahead.
After finding the back of the net, Gakpo skipped the customary celebration and knelt down on the turf, overcome with tears. His teammates immediately surrounded him to shield his privacy.
When he stood back up, Gakpo continued to weep with his jersey pulled over his face, and his teammates rushed over one after another to embrace him.
A few days prior, Gakpo and his partner lost their second child to stillbirth mid-pregnancy, an utterly devastating loss for the family. Even so, he chose to stay with the national squad and compete at the World Cup.
