In matchday two of the UEFA Champions League league phase, 10-man Manchester United fell to a 2-0 away defeat against Atletico Madrid. Following the match, comments made by United defender Lisandro Martínez ignited significant controversy as he openly criticized Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox, pointing directly to the club's flawed summer recruitment.

During this summer's transfer window, Manchester United spent a total of €173.2 million, securing three midfielders: Carlos Baleba (€75.9m), Youri Tielemans (€41m), and Andrey Santos (€56.3m). However, they missed out on primary targets Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernández, failed to sign a left-back to rotate with Luke Shaw, and did not acquire a center-forward to provide cover for the frequently injured Benjamin Šeško.

When asked by reporters whether Manchester United required further investment and if the current squad fell short of Champions League pedigree, Martínez stated candidly: “I expected higher-quality signings. Yes, one hundred percent. I had higher expectations for our technical director, though as players, we must also deliver more. But to perform on nights like this, building a robust, high-caliber squad is essential.”

"Overall, we gave everything last season. We laid the foundations of a great team, but sometimes... coming here to prove a point and failing to achieve the desired result is truly infuriating and disappointing."
