1962: Brazil’s Immortal Reign
On this day, the Brazilian national team cemented their status as football royalty. Despite missing an injured Pelé, they orchestrated a stunning comeback in the FIFA World Cup final against Czechoslovakia. After falling behind 1-0 early, goals from Amarildo (17’), Zito (68’), and Vavá (77’) sealed a 3-1 victory, making Brazil the first team since Italy (1934-1938) to retain the trophy. Garrincha’s brilliance earned him the tournament’s Best Player award, while Vavá and Garrincha shared the Golden Boot with four goals each.


2002: USA’s Cinderella Run

In the Round of 16 at the World Cup,the United States shocked Mexico 2-0. Brian McBride’s early strike and Landon Donovan’s header dismantled El Tri, marking the Americans’ first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 1930. The day also saw Brazil advance past Belgium, setting the stage for their eventual fifth World Cup title.
