The Zamora Traffic Police Unit has completed a preliminary investigation into the traffic accident involving the Jota brothers, with results indicating the crash was most likely caused by vehicle tire failure and speeding—consistent with initial speculation shortly after the incident.
The traffic police unit issued a technical report on the accident, which occurred at 00:40 local time on Thursday, July 3, at the 63.3-kilometer mark of the A-52 highway (in the direction from Pontevedra to Benavente, near the Zamora section). Despite the subsequent severe vehicle fire significantly hampering the investigation, 50-meter-long tire marks on the asphalt, approximately 100 meters from the impact point, became key evidence for the preliminary conclusion.
All evidence from the investigation points to Diogo Jota himself as the likely driver of the vehicle. Due to the severe damage to the remains of the two players caused by the fire, family members could only confirm their identities and positions in the car through the victims' personal belongings.
Although no criminal offense is involved, judicial proceedings have been initiated. The accident investigation is handled by the local court, with Elena Rubio González serving as the presiding judge.
