The 19-year-old Barcelona star made a pointed remark clearly directed at Kane: “I think the Ballon d'Or should go to the best player in the world, without a doubt. Not to a player who has scored 80 goals, because if you score 80 goals, you get the 'top scorer' award. These are two completely different things that people don't understand.”
Confronted with such a direct challenge, BILD put the question to Kane. Rather than retaliating tit-for-tat, Kane answered in a thoroughly gentlemanly fashion: “You don't know exactly what he meant; everyone has their own assumptions. At the end of the day, everyone is different. Yamal is a fantastic player who had a very good season, but so did many others. There are a lot of players who had great seasons. Kane continued: “Everyone has the right to speak their mind the way they want to. You know me, I prefer to let my performances on the pitch do the talking. I answer on the pitch. I don't like talking about myself much, but everyone is different. There is no right or wrong. Others have to judge. It's not up to me to decide, it's down to the voters.”
Kane preferred to highlight his own success rather than dwell on others: “I'm very proud of what I've achieved over the past year—not only the goals, but also the trophies won. All those things—including some World Cup matches—will stay with me for life. Overall, it was a fantastic season.”
Kane's current form remains scorching hot. In his 98th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern, he netted his 100th Bundesliga goal, setting a new record. Such ruthless efficiency is undoubtedly the most emphatic response to Yamal's remarks.
