Previously reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, negotiations for Andrea Pirlo to become the head coach of the Italian national team were near completion, but hit a setback due to commercial cooperation linked to Russia. Giovanni Malagò, President of the Italian Football Federation, is currently reassessing whether it is appropriate to officially sign him.
Pirlo currently manages United FC in Dubai and has also served as the global brand ambassador for Russian betting company Fonbet since October last year. The core issue is not betting itself (Italian regulations prohibit relevant personnel from cooperating with betting brands, which could be resolved by terminating the contract), but rather that this company is a Russian enterprise. Since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022, relations between Italy and Russia have been tense. Pirlo endorsing this Russian company and traveling to Moscow two months ago with Marco Materazzi to participate in promotional activities were seen by many as incompatible with representing the national team.
Several Italian politicians have publicly expressed their stances. European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno criticized Pirlo, stating that he "repeatedly lent his prestige to the Putin regime's operations, participating in activities exploited for Kremlin propaganda while Ukraine was being bombed, and selecting him would be a serious mistake." Other political figures expressed similar concerns, believing that anyone who continued to do propaganda for Russia after 2022 is unsuitable for a national team role.
Pirlo posted on social media to respond to the controversy surrounding his endorsement of the betting company. He stated that last night he learned he was no longer a candidate for the Italian national team head coach position, and therefore felt it necessary to clarify certain circumstances.

Out of respect for the institutions, the federation, and all people involved, I had previously chosen to remain silent. However, after learning last night that I am no longer a candidate for the head coach of the Italian national team, I believe it is necessary to clarify some aspects. In recent days, I have witnessed discussions surrounding my name and the possibility of me becoming the head coach of the Italian national team with deep regret.
Throughout my career, both as a player and now as a coach, I have always strictly abided by the laws of the countries where I work and the contracts I have signed. The recent controversy regarding this partnership is part of my professional journey in the United Arab Emirates and is purely commercial and sporting in nature. Assigning political meaning to this cooperation is equivalent to imposing on me beliefs that I have never expressed and that have nothing to do with me.I would like to thank Maldini and Leonardo for their respect and trust in me. I know their professional capability, rigor, and the love they have always devoted to Italian football.
What saddens me is that a sporting decision was quickly dragged into public debate and ultimately given meanings and intentions that I personally do not agree with.
Love for Italy does not depend on a position. It is part of my history, part of my identity, and will stay with me forever.
